One of the more daunting things about being a makeup artist has to be the constant communication with new people! With your client base constantly growing, and numerous people to speak to everyday, coming up with a way to keep conversation flowing can seem like a big job. If confidence doesn’t come quite as naturally to you as it does to some people, you might find speaking to your clients slightly difficult to begin with. But believe us when we say this will get easier with time! If you’re struggling, there are a few different things you can try in order to feel more comfortable chatting with your lovely customers. Today we are going to share our top tips of how to get better at talking to clients as an MUA.

As a makeup artist, communication with clients is absolutely vital. Whether that’s just small talk about the weather or their plans for the day ahead, or sharing ideas to ensure you give them the perfect look – interacting with customers will help them to feel comfortable. Good conversation can help to avoid any mix ups or misunderstandings. Taking every step to provide the best possible experience can avoid any bad reviews that could be damaging to your business.

Here are our top tips on how to get better at talking to clients as a MUA…

Tip #1 – Get Straight To The Point

Before small talk and general pleasantries are on the cards, make sure you know exactly what you’re doing! It can be so easy to get swept away in general conversation, and the vision for the entire makeup look gets lost. However long you’ve known your client, go into each meeting prepared to get the information you need to do the best job possible. We have faith in you!

Tip #2 – Keep It Professional

At every step of the process, it’s important to keep things professional when possible. Whether that’s in initial social media DM’s, email organisation, or face to face. It’s important to build your professional reputation, and having this approach to all aspects of your business will help you to build trust and prestige.

Tip #3 – Try and Keep Your Space Safe and Calm

Whether you’ve had a difficult day, or your client is going through something stressful themselves – having a safe and calming space to work can help to keep you both in a calm mindset and provide a nice escape for a few hours.

Whether that means keeping things clean and comfortable, or giving your client a safe space for their belongings, communicating with them will be so much easier if you’re both in the right headspace from the offset.

Tip #4 – Find Out About Your Clients History with Makeup

If you’re struggling for relevant conversation starters, consider talking to them about your common love – makeup! Not only will this fill any awkward silences that might appear, but it will also help you along the way. Getting to know their personal beauty routines or day to day makeup choices can help you make the right choices for their skin type. You can also get an idea if they tend to go for a more natural or bold look and what they are hoping for from the session with you.

Tip #5 – Before You Meet, Encourage Your Client To Find Inspiration

A great starting point to communication is always inspiration. Whether they send them over beforehand, or bring a few photographs with them, inspiration is the perfect way to begin finding out their likes and dislikes. It also gives you a clearer picture of what the session will accomplish! This is a great bouncing board to finding out more about them.

Hopefully these tips will get you well on the way to communicating effectively with your clients. Act confident and professional and nobody will have any reason to doubt you!

One final reminder – if things don’t go exactly as planned, don’t let it hold you back. We all have down days, but resilience is so important in this industry. Bounce back and learn from your mistakes. This will help you come back stronger than ever.
