A career in makeup is ever changing. There’s no telling what your future as a Makeup Artist could look like! No two people want the exact same look, and there are always new people to talk to. Have you ever wondered what your life would look like if you combined your passion and your career? Let’s give you a little insight…
You could start out in a salon…
Many makeup artists start out working in a salon. A typical day can vary depending on how booked up your calendar is. A full day of clients can be busy, but will fly by!
In a salon, you will typically be busier on weekends as that is often when people like to get dolled up for their plans. You might work longer days on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday before taking some time off to make up for it midweek.
If your clients like your work, you’ll soon begin to get regulars! There’s not much more rewarding that spending each day making them look and feel amazing for their special events – whether that be a night out, prom, or even a wedding.
The time you don’t spend working on clients, will often be spend organising and cleaning your kit, and responding to potential clients to keep your calendar full of bookings.
You might go freelance…
If you decide you don’t need to be based in a salon to offer your services you can go mobile with your beauty biz. Whether you work from home or travel to see your clients, going freelance has slightly more flexibility when it comes to your work.
Working as a freelance MUA could involve makeup for events like proms or weddings like in a salon, or it could even mean you get to attend sets for fashion shows or photoshoots to provide the service on location.
For fashion shoot work, you may spend a whole day working on one model – ensuring you’re there to provide touch ups between each take.
Without the support of a salon, you may also commit a portion of your time into building and growing your social media and online presence to increase your potential to reach new clients. With work on your own terms, you can guarantee you’ll never feel bored!
Another option could be working on a makeup counter…
Working on a makeup counter is a job that varies slightly from the other career pathways as it is a makeup job and retail position rolled into one.
Not only do you get to show off your amazing makeup skills, but you also get to put your sales skills to the test!
Large beauty stores like MAC often offer full makeovers in store using their products. These are often booked ahead of time, so you know exactly what you’re dealing with. This is where your previous training will come in handy!
As well as this, you’ll be helping potential customers find their perfect product match, giving demonstrations, and offering smaller complimentary makeovers.
Whatever you decide to do, one thing’s for sure – you can spend every day doing what you love the most!
