Beginning to brush up on your makeup artistry skills can seem daunting when you have no little to no experience. Where do you even begin? Just a quick scroll of the internet can provide you with thousands of tutorials and resources from a range of different people. If you feel overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Today, we want to cut out all the noise and give you a simple approach on how to learn makeup if you have no experience.
First things first, find you why. Why do you want to learn makeup? This will motivate you through the learning process.
Perhaps you want to pick the products that will make you feel amazing, or need an added boost your confidence. Learning makeup can help you feel amazing in various environments from the workplace to your date life.
Alternatively, the pandemic may have made you rethink your life and what is important to you. Perhaps you work / life balance has you feeling unsatisfied or low. Rethinking your career might lead you down a beauty route due to the flexibility of the job.
If you’re wondering how to learn makeup if you have no experience, here is a good place to start…
1. Research!
Researching your favourite looks and tutorials is a simple step to learning makeup. There is a huge range of information out there, and as daunting as this may be no information is bad information.
You could start you research by looking at:
- Makeup Magazines
- Online Beauty Blogs
- Youtube Videos
- Asking Friends & Family
- Speaking to a MUA
- Following Makeup Instagram Accounts
This will give you a building block to start your makeup knowledge on. There is so much free content out there! You may surprise yourself at how much you learn.
1. Start Practicing
When you’ve finished doing some research, it’s time to put what you’ve learnt into practice. Attempting some of the looks in tutorials you’ve watched could be a good place to start.
You may have to start investing in a few products you like, but hopefully your research will have given you an idea of where to start.
Ask friends or members of your family if they would mind letting you practice on them for free! Alternatively, if you feel more comfortable, you could just practice on yourself until you’ve built up your confidence enough to move onto others.
The more you experiment with different looks and colours, the better you will get!
3. Train Professionally
Once you’ve acquired a level of knowledge from your learning at home, it’s time to take you to a professional level.
Enrolling at a Makeup school and earning your certification is the perfect way to take makeup from just a passion to a career reality.
This will teach you a level of artistry beyond what you can learn online, with unlimited support and tuition to ensure you attain the level of skill you need to succeed.
Before enrolling at KLMA, Katy also did her research and spent a lot of her free time of YouTube.
She believed she knew a lot about Makeup Artistry and was just enrolling at KLMA for the benefit of receiving her professional qualification.
However, coming into the classroom she mastered techniques that she hadn’t even questioned previously!
Here is what Katy said about her time at KLMA…
“I am forever on YouTube, so I thought I knew quite a lot about makeup artistry. I initially signed up to KLMA purely for the certificate and qualification. Coming into the classroom however was a completely different ballgame. I learnt far more than I ever expected in such a short space of time. The course covered everything. From understanding what the best products are for each skin type, how to correct skin discolouration, and really getting to grips with the use of different brushes and tools to master lots of tricky techniques. These are what they don’t teach you on the Web! The support you receive during and after your training is invaluable, and better than you could ever get online. I have made life-long friends and cannot thank KLMA enough! Would highly recommend.”
